About Us:

Juken New Zealand Ltd (JNL) is an international forest and wood products company operating in local and global timber markets. JNL owns three wood processing plants in the North Island, and forests in the Wairarapa and East Coast regions. We work closely with our parent company in Japan – WoodOne.

The Role:

We are now looking for an experienced and motivated forestry worker to take on a newly created Health and Safety Advisor – Forestry role based at either our Wairarapa Forestry Office (located in Masterton) or our East Coast Forestry Office (located in Gisborne). This is a full-time permanent position working a minimum of 40 hours per week.

The purpose of the H&S Advisor - Forestry is to support the management and continuous improvement of health and safety (H&S) practices in our forests and with our forest partners (i.e. contractors). You will also work closely with the Forestry Industry Safety Council (FISC) as JNL’s representative.


$90-$100K + company car

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide sound advice, guide, and engage with key stakeholders within our Forestry team (including our contractor partners)
  • Analyse, review and improve H&S practices in consultation with the GM – H&S and Forestry GMs
  • Be responsible for reporting and communication of all H&S matters
  • Coach employees and contractors on what ‘good’ H&S looks like
  • Lead critical risk assessment and notifiable incident investigations as directed by the GM – H&S
  • Own delivery of H&S initiatives and improvements
  • Undertake regular on-site audits and reviews against industry good practice.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A focus on continuous improvement and a willingness to learn
  • An H&S technical background is desirable, but not essential
  • An in depth understanding of change management preferably following a Safety II model
  • An interest in innovative thinking and human psychology
  • Competent computer user (e.g., Microsoft Office software)
  • Significant “on the ground” forestry experience
  • Strong relationship management skills
  • The ability to influence and collaborate following Manaakitanga concepts (e.g., showing respect, generosity, and care for others)
  • The ability and commitment to regularly travel between the Tairawhiti/East Coast and Wairarapa regions
  • Thought leadership
  • You will have a strong affinity to ensure safe operations and are willing and able to challenge the status quo where needed.
